DHG - State of business

We wanted to write a short article to explain the state of Detective Hawk Games. As with many small businesses, we are experiencing uncertainty when it comes to global trade. The vast majority of our stock is not made within the United States.

We get our products from both the publishers and the distributors of games. They in turn import those games. Those additional costs that they pay to bring in those games to the USA are then passed on to the retailers like us.

As a small business, this is not an expense we can absorb, so, unfortunately we in turn will pass that onto you, our customers. On a product by product basis, you may see prices rise over the next couple months anywhere from 10% - 145% of the original price. The amount depends on where the product is imported from.

We do not have any control over where the product is made, so we are at the mercy of the publishers and the distributors when it comes to price.

Our prices on Detective Hawk Games are always based directly on the price we pay for products.  These prices are generally a percentage of the full MSRP price which is set by the publishers.

We try to be fairly consistent when it comes to price and we don't mark up games based on current demand. We just want to do right by our customers. We're gamers too and know how expensive this hobby can be.

We will do our best to send out a newsletter with any price change notices as soon as we hear about them.

(Side note: Please keep in mind if a product says "This item is in the Speakeasy", you must add it to your cart to see the price)

As far as the business goes, our model of ordering in the majority of your orders each week, will continue and we have spoken to the suppliers and if prices go up they'll let us know and honor the old price for orders already placed.

The exception to this rule is preorders. We will only list games for the foreseeable future that have an MSRP set by the publisher. If a game has been announced with no price, it will not be listed. If an item is announced with a price, but that price goes up before it ships to us, we will let you know and offer you the ability to pay the difference.

Our new Shipping Policy will continue for the forseeable future. You will continue to receive $10 towards shipping for every $100 you spend. If your shipping costs are less than your discount, you will get your items shipped for free. If your shipping costs are more than the discount, you will pay the difference. You may also use your loyalty clues towards free shipping.

Next, let's talk weekly discounts. For the next few months, we have removed all games from the Weekly Deals category. This list was previously provided to us on a Monday and we passed the discounts we receive directly on to you. At present the distributor has paused these deals. We are adding in another distributor to help with our out of stock products. They offer their own discount list each week of 20-25 games. Once they are integrated with the site, the weekly deals will return on a much reduced scale.

Finally, the social aspect of our work is going to ramp up. We are going to be reviewing more board games both in article format and video podcast format. We just need some time to edit them. That's the next task.

We know that a lot of business's are having difficulty keeping up with the changes. We are in the process trying to automate the stock availability and price changes to run nightly. (Right now everything runs weekly)  That is as a bit more of a "lift" but Iain, our owner, is a trained web programmer. We'll let you know when the automation is ready.

So far we see a few challenges, but nothing we can't overcome together. We do want to thank you for your support and we look forward to continuing to bring board games to you.
